STEVIE O’CHIN
Djila

2021
acrylic on canvas
187 x 89cm

This painting represents a dilly bag.

Made from the lomandra longifolia plants, also know as ‘djila’, to the Kabi Kabi people.

The black lines represent the bottom of the dilly bag, as if you are look into it.

The brown circles represent the dried out seeds & husk, which indicates it’s at the end of its cycle, ready to pick.

My people had many uses for the lomandra plant; they used it make nets to catch fish, gather & store food, and to make rope for securing shelter.
