Information about the artist:

ABOUT LEE. I am a practicing Indigenous artist from Yunbenun country, Magnetic Island. I have worked in the DFV (Domestic Family Violence) space for a number of years, and am passionate about creating safe, culturally appropriate yarning spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women with a lived experience of DFV. Indigenous women’s spaces, such as shelters, safe houses, community centres and organisations have recognised the healing power of weaving and have incorporated it into their programs and services for women who have experienced domestic and family violence.

These spaces provide a safe, supportive, and culturally appropriate environments for women to learn and practice weaving, as well as connect with other women who have had similar experiences. Through weaving, indigenous women who have experienced domestic and family violence can reclaim their cultural identity, express their creativity, and connect with their community in a meaningful way. Weaving can also help women build self-esteem, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment, which are all important factors in the healing process. I’d love to have a yarn with you about creating safe yarning spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in your community.
